The Essential Packing List for International Travel

Packing light does not mean packing poorly. Whether you are heading to Europe for two weeks or Southeast Asia for ten days, a clear list keeps stress low and security lines short.

Documents (carry-on only)

  • Passport valid for at least six months beyond return date
  • Printed and digital copies of visas, e-visas, and hotel confirmations
  • Travel insurance policy number and emergency contacts
  • Driver’s license and International Driving Permit if renting a car
  • Credit cards and a small amount of local currency for arrival

Tech and power

  • Universal power adapter with USB ports
  • Phone, charger, and portable battery
  • E-reader or tablet for long flights
  • Noise-canceling headphones

Health and comfort

  • Prescription medications in original containers plus a short doctor’s note
  • Basic first-aid: bandages, pain reliever, antihistamine
  • Reusable water bottle (empty through security)
  • Light scarf or layer for cold cabins and conservative sites

Clothing strategy

Choose a neutral color palette so every top works with every bottom. Roll clothes instead of folding to save space. Pack one “nice” outfit for dinners or unexpected formal venues.

What to leave at home

Bulky hair tools, full-size toiletries, and “just in case” items you can buy locally rarely earn their weight. If you have not used it on your last three trips, you probably will not need it now.
