Welcome to China — Essential Travel Information

To ensure a smooth and enjoyable visit, please take note of the following entry requirements and local regulations.

I. Entry Documents & Visa

  1. Please carry a valid passport with a remaining validity of at least 6 months and at least 1 blank visa page.
  2. Travelers from certain countries may enter visa-free for short-term tourism. All others are required to obtain an L-category tourist visa in advance.
  3. Upon arrival, please complete the Foreigner Entry Card. Fingerprint collection is generally required for travelers aged 14 to 70.
  4. Within 24 hours of arrival, you must complete accommodation registration — hotels and guesthouses will handle this on your behalf. Please carry your original passport or a photocopy at all times for verification purposes.

II. Customs & Prohibited Items

The following items are prohibited from entry: fresh fruits, meat products, raw or fresh produce, animal and plant derivatives, controlled substances, firearms and ammunition, and flammable or explosive materials. If you are carrying personal medications, it is advisable to bring an English-language prescription or product leaflet. If you are carrying cash or equivalent foreign currency exceeding USD $5,000, a proactive customs declaration is required.

III. Currency & Payments

The official currency is the Chinese Renminbi (CNY). WeChat Pay and Alipay are widely used throughout China and can be linked to overseas bank cards for convenient payment. It is recommended to carry a small amount of cash for smaller shops and public transportation. Currency exchange should only be conducted at airports, banks, or authorized exchange counters — private currency exchange is illegal.

IV. Connectivity & Communications

You may activate international roaming on your existing SIM card, or purchase a local Chinese SIM card or data package upon arrival. Please note that certain overseas social media platforms and apps are not directly accessible on the Chinese mainland. It is advisable to download offline translation tools and maps before your departure.

V. Traffic & Transportation

Traffic in China travels on the right-hand side of the road. Always use designated pedestrian crossings and observe traffic signals. China’s high-speed rail network is fast and convenient — tickets are purchased using your passport under a real-name registration system. Always use licensed taxis or ride-hailing apps, and avoid unlicensed vehicles.

VI. Local Laws & Regulations (Strictly Observe)

  1. All visitors must strictly comply with Chinese law. Gambling, drug use, pornography, and unauthorized photography of military or classified facilities are strictly prohibited.
  2. Loud behavior, spitting, and littering in public spaces are not permitted.
  3. Smoking — including e-cigarettes — is fully prohibited in all indoor public spaces and on public transportation.
  4. When visiting religious sites, museums, and scenic attractions, please dress appropriately, behave respectfully, and observe all photography restrictions.

VII. General Travel Tips

The electrical voltage in China is 220V. Power sockets are typically Type A, Type I, or Type G — a universal travel adapter is recommended. China’s climate varies significantly by region and season, so please pack clothing, sunscreen, and rain gear accordingly.
